How much does a retaining wall cost per square foot?
Nicolock’s July 2026 US planning article gives about $20–$50 per square foot of exposed face for an installed wall. Q&A Landscaping publishes $90–$100 per square foot for 2–4 ft Versa-Lok walls with easy or normal access in Pittsburgh. These are two different pricing references, not the low and high ends of one national average.
Use the published figures to frame questions for local contractors. A useful quote identifies the wall system, height, face-area definition, access and included work. Keep a materials-only takeoff separate from a price for a finished wall.

| Source and market | Published price per ft² | Scope and date |
|---|---|---|
| Nicolock; broad US planning article | $20–$50 | Installed planning reference; July 8, 2026. Site work and other extras can move a project outside the range. |
| Q&A Landscaping; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | $90–$100; easy/normal access | Installed Versa-Lok, 2–4 ft high; updated October 2026. $2,500 project minimum. Small, tall and hard-access walls have higher rates; projects over 200 ft² are individually priced. |
Cost per linear foot depends on wall height
Multiply a comparable square-foot rate by the stated wall height to obtain a linear-foot rate. For a 3 ft exposed face, the two references above become $60–$150 and $270–$300 per linear foot respectively. These are our arithmetic conversions, not separately published quotes.
For a changing-height wall, calculate each section’s face area and add the areas. Do not multiply the full length by an average height unless that average accurately represents the measured face. Confirm whether the contractor prices exposed face, constructed face including buried courses, or another basis.
Face area (ft²) = run (ft) × exposed height (ft) Price per linear ft = price per ft² × exposed height (ft) Initial comparison = face area × comparable installed rate
How much does a 30-foot retaining wall cost?
A 30 ft run with a 3 ft exposed face has 90 ft² of face area. Applying the first benchmark gives $1,800–$4,500; applying the Pittsburgh easy/normal-access rates gives $8,100–$9,000. The table extends the same arithmetic to other heights while holding each comparison rate fixed.
The Pittsburgh rows use 2–4 ft wall heights and 60–120 ft² of face area. The contractor lists $110 per ft² or more for walls of 30 ft² or less, heights above 4 ft, or difficult access; it also applies a $2,500 project minimum and prices walls above 200 ft² individually.
These calculations illustrate area and scope, rather than a design or a price promise. Height, reinforcement, drainage, excavation and access can change the applicable rate. The figures do not establish a suitable construction detail for a 2, 3 or 4 ft wall.
| 30 ft run × exposed height | Face area | At $20–$50/ft² | At $90–$100/ft²; easy/normal access |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 ft high | 60 ft² | $1,200–$3,000 | $5,400–$6,000 |
| 3 ft high | 90 ft² | $1,800–$4,500 | $8,100–$9,000 |
| 4 ft high | 120 ft² | $2,400–$6,000 | $10,800–$12,000 |
Check the scope behind an installed price
Ask each contractor to mark inclusions, exclusions and allowances against the same measured wall. A cheaper face-area rate can leave major work to a separate invoice.
| Quote line | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Wall system | Exact face units, caps, special units, finish, installed area and packaging. |
| Ground work | Excavation, demolition, disposal, access, equipment and restoration. |
| Drainage and reinforcement | Base, backfill, pipe and outlet, geotextile, and any design-specified geogrid. |
| Approvals and design | Required permits, engineering documents, inspections and who obtains them. |
| Commercial terms | Labor, delivery, unloading, taxes, minimum orders and how changes are charged. |
Build your budget from local quotes
Use our cost calculator to enter quoted material prices, a separate labor rate, delivery and modeled tax. Its existing sample prices are fictional arithmetic inputs. The published benchmarks above do not replace those inputs or become regional price defaults.
An installed rate already includes some combination of materials and labor. Entering that whole rate as labor and then adding material costs would count part of the work twice. Either compare the installed total outside the calculator or obtain a split of materials, labor and other charges.
Record the quote date, validity period, currency, measurement basis and excluded work. Keep the accepted scope with the quantities so later changes in height, product or drainage can be priced consistently.
Frequently asked questions
Does a price per square foot mean ground area or wall face?
The references in this guide use wall face, calculated from run and height. Your contractor may use another contractual basis, including buried courses, so ask for that definition in writing.
Are these prices valid outside the United States?
These are USD references from a US manufacturer article and a Pittsburgh contractor. They do not establish Australian, British, Canadian or other local rates. Obtain local quotes in the required currency.
Does the calculator supply live retaining wall prices?
No. It prices quantities using your entries. Starting prices are examples; replace them with supplier and contractor quotes, and budget separately for excluded work.
